Super Eagles Fire Blank as They Fall to Guinea

With just 6 days to the Super Eagles first game at the AFCON in Ivory coast they lose 2-0 to Guinea.

In preparation for the Afcon which begins in 5 days the super eagles of Nigeria have faced some teams in preparation.

Although the Super Eagles were able to easily see off Dubai club Al Gharib in an unofficial fixture, Nigeria squared off against the Syli National of Guinea in their solitary preparatory fixture for the AFCON.

Coach Jose Peseiro, perhaps attempting to see the depth in his squad, named an unusual starting eleven, with regulars – Victor Osimhen and Alex Iwobi, starting from the bench while Victor Boniface was sidelined because of an injury.

As expected, the Super Eagles dominated the play and possession. It would prove to be useless as Guinea opened the scoring in the 14th minute via a goal from Aguibou Camara, which made it 1-0 for Guinea.

Further disappointment laid at the wake for the Super Eagles as Moses Simon squandered a chance from the spot after Sadiq Umar was fouled five minutes after the opener.

Umar and Samuel Chukwueze both got chances to equalize for Nigeria, but failed to utilize their chances before the end of the first half.

The Eagles started the second half well, but they still lacked the cutting edge with both Chukwueze and Awaziem failing to convert their chances.

Then, just like the first, Guinea struck again through Facinet Conte to make it 2-0 after 64 minutes.

Coach Peseiro in a bid to change the game introduced a flurry of substitutions which included Calvin Bassey, Frank Onyeka, and Iwobi to replace Raphael Onyedika, Kenneth Omeruo, and Chidozie Awaziem in the 73rd minute, but the score remained the same.

It eventually ended 2-0 to the Guineans in Abu Dhabi. Peseiro and his lads will hope this form does not follow them into their first game against Equatorial Guinea in six days at the Nations Cup.
