Late last month Super Eagles’ head coach, Jose Peserio, released a 25-man shortlist that would represent the country at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2024.
The list of players was filled with names such as Frank Uzoho, Victor Osihmen, Wilfred Ndidi, and many more.
Among the longstanding players that retained his spot, despite the outcry from Nigerians, is the super eagles captain Ahmed Musa.
Although many could go on to tell you why he should not be involved in this team, yet Golden page Magazine is here to show the possible talent left out of the squad to accommodate the Super Eagles’ Legend.
Below is the list of both home-grown and abroad strikers that could have followed the team instead of the former Kano Pillars striker:
Robert Mizo
For those who do not know who Robert Mizo is, he is a Nigerian born attacker, currently the second highest goal scorer in the Nigerian Premier League.
He has also won the best player in the NPFL for 2023. Although many would not fashion in home-grown players into their squads, I think, including the 23 year old maybe a breath of fresh air the team needs.
At least, South Africa has as many as 12 home-grown players in their team, and they are doing well.
Gift Orban
Orban has been a revelation to the Belgian pro league side, A.A Genk, and has overtime proven to be a reliable option for the team.
Even as many would believe he has not yet played enough with the national team to be called, it would also be a fair assessment that one can only grow with the time he is being given. Unfortunately, he has not been given any time in AFCON.
Last season, he finished the season with 16 goals from 15 games played for the club in the league.
Cyriel Dessers
The striker is currently plying his trade with Scottish outfit, Rangers, and has managed to be involved with eight goals in seventeen games for the side.
Paul Onuachu
Onuachu was once considered as one of the most sort after Nigerian strikers in the world. He made what many consider to be a wrong move by moving to now relegated Southampton where he was not able to register a single goal.
However, it seems like he has been able to turn his life around as he has now been involved with 10 goals from 13 matches on loan for Turkish Super Lig side, Trabzonspor.
Terem Moffi
Anyone, who is familiar with the French Ligue 1, will definitely know Terem Moffi the striker. He now plies his trade with Ogc Nice.
He has currently managed 6 goals and 2 assists in 16 league games for the French outfit. His best season is coming during his time with Lorient, where he scooped up 14 goals and 2 assist.
Emmanuel Dennis
Dennis is currently just like Onuachu. Unlike Onuachu, he is yet to find his feet in the Turkish Super Lig outfit, Istanbul Başakşehir F.K.
Nathan Tella
Although he is a teammate with Victor Boniface, he is yet to find a way to be a regular starter in Xabi Alonso’s side.
He is in this list because unlike the other players, he is a natural winger and that is a position that the Super Eagles seem not to have enough backup in.
His record proved that he has managed a goal in 8 games this season.
This list was not created to mock the Super Eagles’ legend, but it is written with the belief that Musa has nothing to offer the new team on the pitch as he has only been able to score once for the super eagles since 2019. He also has only managed 1 goal across 28 appearances for club this year.
