The parent company of African television giants Dstv, Multichoice has said the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament would not be broadcasted on its platform.
This was disclosed in statement made available to newsmen.
According to the statement, the satellite failed to secure the broadcasting rights to broadcast the continent’s biggest footballing event on its SuperSport channels.
“Multichoice Africa remains committed to ensuring football fans across Africa continue to enjoy unrivaled access to entertainment and football games available on DStv and GOtv platforms including, the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Zambian Super League, and many more of football’s most prestigious competitions.”

The 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations will kickoff in Ivory coast on 13 January with the host nation drawn in Group A with Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria.
The Super Eagles will take on Equatorial Guinea on 14 January in their first match before further clashes with Ivory Coast on 18 January and Guinea Bissau 22 January.
MultiChoice’s decision sparked outrage and garnered negative responses from numerous Nigerians, who perceived it as a lack of respect and commitment to fostering the growth of African homegrown football.
