Trump Welcomes China’s Xi to Washington as Leaders Seek Stability Amid Deep Differences

WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House on Thursday for a high-profile state visit that placed trade, artificial intelligence, strategic competition and other sensitive issues at the center of renewed U.S.-China diplomacy.

Xi’s visit, his first to Washington in more than a decade, brought the leaders of the world’s two largest economies together for their second meeting of the year. The visit was marked by elaborate ceremonial events, private discussions and a state dinner hosted by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.

Trump personally greeted Xi when the Chinese president arrived in the Washington area on Wednesday, an unusual diplomatic gesture that underscored the importance the administration placed on the visit. The White House had announced that Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, would receive a formal state welcome the following day.

At the White House on Thursday, Trump and Xi took part in a formal arrival ceremony before holding extended talks. The program also included a military review and a state dinner attended by prominent figures from the American technology and business sectors.

Trade remained one of the major issues surrounding the summit.

The United States and China have spent years imposing tariffs and restrictions on each other’s economies, while both governments have sought to prevent those disputes from escalating into a broader confrontation.

The two sides have also been working to implement agreements reached earlier in 2026. According to reporting by The Associated Press, those arrangements included discussions on reciprocal tariff reductions, agricultural trade, industrial exports and the creation of mechanisms intended to increase investment and commercial cooperation. Progress on several commitments has remained uneven.

Rare-earth minerals were another important issue. China plays a major role in global rare-earth supply chains, making the issue particularly significant for industries ranging from electronics to advanced manufacturing.

Artificial intelligence was also prominent during the summit.

Trump had said ahead of the meeting that advanced AI, which he has referred to as “superintelligence,” would be a major subject of discussion. Both leaders referred to artificial intelligence in their opening remarks. Xi emphasized the importance of keeping AI development under human control, according to reporting from the meeting.

The presence of major American technology executives at the state dinner further highlighted the growing importance of AI to the U.S.-China relationship. Guests included senior figures associated with companies such as Amazon, Alphabet, OpenAI, Apple, Tesla, Nvidia and Dell Technologies.

A warmer tone, but major disagreements remainImage

Despite the ceremony surrounding the visit, the meeting did not erase the significant differences between Washington and Beijing.

Taiwan remains one of the most sensitive issues in the bilateral relationship. The United States maintains close unofficial relations with Taiwan and provides it with defensive support, while Beijing considers Taiwan part of China and opposes outside military and political support for the island.

The two governments also continue to compete over advanced technology, trade, strategic minerals and geopolitical influence.

The war in Iran and broader questions about China’s relationship with countries involved in the conflict were also part of the wider diplomatic environment surrounding the summit. Analysts and international officials have closely watched whether Washington and Beijing can maintain communication on these issues while managing their broader strategic rivalry.

Xi used his meeting with Trump to call for a more stable framework for relations between the two countries. China’s government said Xi urged both sides to translate a new vision of a “constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability” into practical action.

According to China’s official account of the meeting, Xi said the two countries needed to find the appropriate way for two major powers to coexist and emphasized the importance of continued communication between their leaders.

From confrontation toward managed competition

The Washington summit represents another stage in the effort by the two governments to manage a relationship that combines economic interdependence with intense strategic competition.

Earlier this year, Trump and Xi reached agreements during Trump’s visit to China. The White House said in May that the two leaders had agreed to work toward a constructive relationship based on “strategic stability,” while announcing that Xi would later visit Washington.

The September meeting builds on that diplomatic engagement.

Trump described his talks with Xi as a “great meeting” when speaking to reporters afterward. His public remarks emphasized the cordial atmosphere surrounding the visit, even as many of the underlying disagreements between the two governments remained unresolved.

The state dinner provided a highly visible conclusion to the day, with Trump and Xi presenting a more cooperative public image than might have been expected given the breadth of disagreements between Washington and Beijing.

Yet the significance of the summit will ultimately depend less on the ceremony than on whether the two governments can turn their renewed leader-level communication into concrete agreements on trade, technology, strategic minerals and other areas of contention.

A pivotal relationshipImage

The United States and China remain central to the global economy, and decisions made by their governments can affect international trade, technology markets, supply chains and security well beyond their borders.

Xi’s return to Washington therefore carries significance beyond the symbolism of a state visit. It provides both governments with an opportunity to keep direct communication open while attempting to manage disputes that have the potential to affect the wider international system.

For Trump and Xi, the challenge is balancing cooperation where their interests overlap with competition where they do not.

The Washington summit has demonstrated that, despite persistent disagreements, the two leaders remain willing to meet directly and maintain high-level engagement.

Whether that diplomacy produces lasting agreements will become clearer in the months ahead.
