Grammy-winning Nigerian sensation, Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has taken to social media to set the record straight that he is not an Afrobeats artiste.
Via his Instagram story, Wizkid announced the completion of his next album while at the same time he was issuing a disclaimer to his fans. He cautioned them against expecting an Afrobeats rendition from him in his upcoming project.
“Album done! See you soon b*tches!” he exclaimed, before delivering a blunt message to those who associate him solely with Afrobeats.
“And abeg if you like Pakurumo Wizkid, don’t download this new album. In fact, delete me from your playlist and your life! If you like Afrobeats, don’t download my album. I’m not a f*cking Afrobeats artiste. I am not Afro anything.”
This statement from the acclaimed musician left many fans and industry insiders scratching their heads, as Wizkid has long been associated with the Afrobeats genre, where’s he has undoubtedly played a pivotal role in popularizing Afrobeats on the global stage.
However, his latest declaration suggests a departure from the genre that has defined much of his career.
In response to this revelation, fans and music enthusiasts have expressed mixed reactions. Some have applauded Wizkid for his boldness in breaking away from the confines of a single genre, while others have expressed disappointment, feeling that his music has been a significant part of the Afrobeats movement.

Paramount Pictures USA, on January 25, announced the completion of their much-anticipated Bob Marley-inspired movie, unveiling a star-studded soundtrack list to accompany the film’s release.
The soundtrack, features the likes of Afrobeats rising star, Bloody Civilian, and Grammy award-winning artist, Wizkid.
Bloody Civilian, renowned for her soulful and powerful vocals, lent her talent to a rendition of Bob Marley’s 1977 hit_’Natural Mystic,’ while Wizkid took on the monumental task of reimagining ‘One Love,’ one of Marley’s most revered tracks.
Featured on the other soundtracks in the movie are Daniel Caesar, Kacey Musgraves, Jesse Reyez, Leon Bridges, and Bob Marley’s own grandson, Skip Marley.
In June 2018, Paramount Pictures announced that they were developing a biographical drama film based on the life of singer and songwriter Bob Marley, with Marley’s son Ziggy Marley serving as a producer.
The biopic is biographical musical drama film directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, detailing the singer’s trajectory from his rise to fame in the mid-1970s up until his death in 1981.
