Nigerian chess maestro Tunde Onakoya has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest marathon chess session, surpassing the previous record set by Norwegian chess players in 2018.
The record-breaking moment occurred in New York City’s Times Square, where Onakoya played chess continuously for over 58 hours, aiming for an unprecedented 60-hour marathon.
In an enthusiastic post on his X account, Onakoya said: “We have done it. We’re pushing to 60 hours, guys. We’re not stopping yet. Let’s keep going.”
His effort is not just for the record but also serves a noble cause — raising funds for the education of underprivileged African children.
“This is our why – the reason we are doing this. Let’s demonstrate to the world the incredible power of love. Together, we can make this happen,” he added.
Onakoya’s endeavour began after breaking the previous record held by Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad, who played for 56 hours and 9 minutes.
Now, with the record in his name, Onakoya was joined by American chess National Master Shawn Martinez, well-known in the New York chess community.
Both players are recognised as formidable opponents and hold the title of National Masters.

The event is orchestrated by Chess in Slums Africa, a foundation spearheaded by Onakoya, which emphasizes the importance of education through chess.
The foundation released a statement explaining the nature of the record: “This record attempt requires a team of two players. Tunde Onakoya (NG) will be facing off against Shawn Martinez (US) for the challenge. Both players will hold the record title.”
Support for Onakoya’s record attempt has been widespread, with endorsements coming from high-profile figures including Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Nigerian musicians Davido and Adekunle Gold.
As the chess marathon continues, fans and supporters from around the world watch eagerly, hoping Onakoya can reach his 60-hour goal and successfully meet his fundraising target for a cause that promises to make a significant difference.
