The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, United States, collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday morning after being struck by a ship, sparking fears of mass casualties.
Reports indicated that the vessel collided with the bridge around 1:30 am, igniting a fire before ultimately sinking. The impact caused significant structural damage, leading to the buckling of the bridge and sending multiple vehicles plummeting into the waters below.
Emergency responders swiftly mobilized to the scene, with rescue efforts already underway, according to Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott. The situation has been classified as a “developing mass casualty event,” prompting Maryland Governor Wes Moore to declare a state of emergency and request federal assistance to manage the crisis effectively.
Kevin Cartwright, Director of Communications for the Baltimore City Fire Department, described receiving frantic 911 calls reporting the collision and subsequent bridge collapse. The closure of all lanes on the Key Bridge has prompted traffic diversions, exacerbating the chaos of the unfolding emergency.
The exact number of vehicles involved remains uncertain, but authorities have confirmed the presence of a significant tractor-trailer among them. Up to 20 individuals are feared to have been thrown into the water, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Cartwright emphasized the urgent need for rescue and recovery operations amid what he termed a “dire emergency.”
However, the rescue efforts are being hampered by precarious conditions, with debris and cargo dangling precariously from the damaged bridge. Responders are proceeding cautiously to ensure their safety while attempting to reach those in distress.
A live video stream captured the harrowing moment of impact as the ship collided with the bridge, leading to the catastrophic collapse witnessed by viewers worldwide. Synergy Marine Corp, responsible for managing the container ship involved, confirmed that all crew members, including pilots, were safe with no reported injuries.
