The Super Falcons of Nigeria has defeated the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in their CAF Women’s Olympics qualifier.
The Super Falcons of Nigeria have advanced to the final round of qualifiers for the women’s football event at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Nigeria edged Cameroon 1-0 on aggregate in the third round of qualifiers for the quadrennial games.
The Falcons were earlier held to a goalless draw at the Stade de la Réunification, Douala, in the first leg last week, but they put a vital goal past the Cameroonians at the Moshood Abiola stadium yesterday.
A first-half goal from Esther Okoronkwo was the sole difference in the match on the knife edge.
Okoronkwo was at the right place to tap home the ball from the near post after a brilliant mesmerizing run into the box by Jennifer Echegini.

Also, the Nigerian goalie Chiamaka Nnadozie also made important saves for Nigeria as the Cameroonians poured forward, creating chances to level the game and upturn the encounter with an away goal.
They were unable to do so and fell just short of qualifying.
The Falcons, who reached the round of 16 at last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, will complete their chase for an Olympic place when they face the winner of the third-round fixture between South Africa or Tanzania in April.
Only two teams will represent Africa at the 2024 Olympics.
The win means Nigeria has now advanced to the final round of qualifiers for the women’s football event for the first time since 2012.
Let us also be aware that they had previously lost in this round in 2016 (Rio, Brazil) and 2020 (Tokyo, Japan) to Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast respectively.
Similarly, the win against Cameroon today marks revenge for the Super Falcons who also were denied a place at the 2012 London Olympics by the Indomitable Lionesses.
If the super Falcons can win the final round, they will be able to book their place in the Olympics games for the first time since 2008.
The Super Falcons have only previously played at the Olympics in 2000, 2004, and 2008.
