In a sad turn of events, Emilio Nsue has decided to hang up his boot with the national team following some controversies after Afcon.
Nsue’s decision came in the wake of a suspension handed down by his national football association, citing misconduct, with the nation’s vice president, Teodora Nguema – news on X.
Teodora Nguema’s acknowledgement of Nsue’s retirement reflects the gratitude the nation holds for him: “After discussions, captain Emilio Nsue López has declared his retirement from the national team.
I acknowledge his contributions over the 12 years he has represented the Nzalang Nacional and wish him success in his future endeavours.”

Nsue’s journey with the Nzalang Nacional has been nothing short of phenomenal and this decision will surely leave fans and teammates alike scratching their heads.
His phenomenal national team career began with a transition to the national team in 2013, following a youth career with Spain. This was a boon for Equatorial Guinea.
Nsue leaves behind a legacy as the nation’s all-time top scorer, with 22 goals from 44 caps, making him a true footballing icon for the country.
It is unfair that at the climaxing of his national team career it ended with a Golden Boot win at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he netted five goals—all in the group stage, including a super free-kick from more than 30 yards away from the goal post.
Nsue’s career, which saw stints with notable clubs like Middlesbrough and Birmingham City, was adorned with memorable moments, especially at the AFCON tournaments.
