Lagos Police has successfully apprehended two individuals, Olumide Oladiji and Lekan Ibrahim, for engaging in traffic robbery while pretending to be beggars.
The arrests took place in the bustling Agungi Lekki area, proving the force’s efforts to curb crime in the metropolis.
The incident unfolded on the evening of March 15, around 7:30 pm, when the duo targeted unsuspecting motorists stuck in traffic. While disguised as beggars, they approached a vehicle, forcibly taking the driver’s mobile phone and a gold necklace.
The quick-thinking victim immediately notified the nearby patrol team from the Ilasan division, who were stationed at the Jakande roundabout, leading to the prompt apprehension of the culprits.
The Lagos police source disclosed that the strategy of posing as beggars to commit such crimes is not new, but remains a challenging scenario for law enforcement to manage due to the unsuspecting nature of such disguises.
The source elaborated on the specifics of the robbery, highlighting the distress it caused the victim and the swift response by the police that ensured the criminals did not get far.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), confirmed the arrests, stating that the stolen items have been recovered from Oladiji and Ibrahim. He however assured the public that the suspects would face the full wrath of the law, emphasizing Lagos police commitment to safeguarding lives and properties in Lagos.

This incident is among the series of similar arrests made earlier in the year, where a gang of traffic robbers was apprehended in the Orile-Iganmu area, following a tip-off from concerned citizens. The gang was notorious for emerging from hiding spots and using weapons to intimidate and rob motorists.
The Lagos State Police have pledged to intensify their efforts to combat traffic robbery, urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
