The Lagos State government has uncovered a startling discovery beneath the Dolphin Estate Bridge in Ikoyi, revealing an under-bridge apartment where tenants had been paying an annual rent of N250,000.
The revelation came from the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who disclosed that the apartment around Ikoyi comprised 86 partitioned rooms, ranging in size from 10×10 to 12×10.
Wahab shared this information via X, accompanied by videos showcasing the eviction of illegal structures, including a container used for various illicit activities. The enforcement team of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources successfully cleared the area beneath the Dolphin Estate Bridge.
Also, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, confirmed the eviction of squatters from beneath the bridge. He stated that 23 individuals were arrested during the operation conducted by officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), commonly known as KAI.
Rotimi-Akodu emphasized the critical infrastructure’s vulnerability due to the illegal settlement, which prompted the government’s swift action. He reiterated that the law would be upheld, with continued monitoring of the area to prevent further encroachment.

Furthermore, Rotimi-Akodu highlighted the hazardous conditions in relation to the materials present in the under-bridge dwellings. Those were the use of wood materials for shelters, the use of gas cylinders, with stored fuel for generators – all of them posing significant risks of disaster.
However, the eviction underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding public infrastructure and enforcing urban regulations to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in Lagos State.
