Amidst growing global concern, the World Health Organization (WHO) has categorized the newly identified COVID-19 variant, JN.1, as a “variant of interest.”
The variant, which emerged in the United States in September, has rapidly spread to 41 countries, prompting heightened scrutiny from public health agencies worldwide.
Understanding JN.1: What We Know So Far
Origin and Characteristics: JN.1 is a descendant of the BA 2.86 variant, itself part of the lineage of the notorious “Omicron” strain. Notably, JN.1 exhibits a higher genetic divergence, with 21 mutations in its spike proteins compared to BA 2.86’s 20. The additional mutation, L455S, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), may contribute to the virus evading immune responses.
Global Spread: Initially detected in the US, JN.1 has now spread to multiple countries, including France, Singapore, Canada, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and China, with 21 reported cases in India. In the US, JN.1’s presence surged from 0.1% to 15-29% of COVID cases by December 8, raising concerns.
Concerns and Precautions: While the CDC has not found evidence suggesting increased public health risks, experts attribute rising cases to seasonal trends. Winter conditions, increased indoor activities, and reduced ventilation may contribute to efficient virus transmission. Precautionary measures, such as social distancing and mask-wearing, are strongly encouraged.
WHO’s Evaluation and Response
Risk Assessment: The WHO has evaluated JN.1’s risk in terms of severity as currently low but acknowledges its high growth advantage due to increasing cases. The agency emphasizes the need for member states to closely monitor cases, share data, and potentially modify global advisories based on evolving circumstances.
