In a landmark ruling today, a court in Spain has delivered a verdict against former Barcelona and Brazil footballer, Dani Alves, finding him guilty of raping a woman in a Barcelona nightclub.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of December 31, 2022, has led to a sentence of four and a half years in prison for the 40-year-old athlete.

Alves, known as one of the most celebrated footballers in history, has been embroiled in legal proceedings since his arrest in January 2023. Throughout the trial, he vehemently denied the allegations, but the court’s decision establishes that the encounter was non-consensual, despite Alves’ claims to the contrary.

The prosecution presented evidence beyond the victim’s testimony, demonstrating that Alves had indeed committed the assault. Consequently, he has been ordered to compensate the victim with €150,000 (£128,500).

During the trial, Alves altered his testimony multiple times, initially denying any acquaintance with the accuser, then admitting to encountering her in the nightclub’s restroom but asserting that no misconduct occurred. Subsequently, he changed his narrative once more, alleging consensual intercourse, a claim refuted by the court’s findings.

Prosecutors detailed the events leading up to the assault, alleging that Alves and an associate had purchased champagne for three young women before coercing one of them into a secluded area where the attack took place.

Alves, renowned for his illustrious career of spanning spells at Barcelona and representing Brazil in the 2022 World Cup, faces the consequences of his actions with a prison sentence which is far shorter than the nine years initially sought by the prosecution due to recent legal amendments emphasizing consent in sexual encounters under the “Only Yes is Yes” principle.

As Alves contemplates his appeal options, this verdict sends a powerful message about accountability and the imperative of respecting boundaries in all interactions.
