The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the office of the Executive Director/CEO of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Dr. Shaibu Husseini, has expanded its prohibition to include the depiction of tobacco use in Nollywood films.

This follows the earlier ban on money rituals and the glamorization of various vices.

This new regulation aims to further sanitize the Nigerian film industry by promoting healthier and more positive portrayals on screen. The NFVCB’s decision aligns with efforts to protect young viewers from harmful influences and to promote smoke-free environments.

Dr. Husseini emphasized that this move is part of a broader strategy to tackle the industry’s challenges and ensure that the content produced is socially responsible. The NFVCB, in collaboration with Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), is set to conduct extensive enlightenment programs in schools and communities to support this initiative.

The prohibition has been widely welcomed as a positive step towards creating a more responsible and health-conscious film industry in Nigeria.
