The Federal Government has officially prohibited the depiction of money rituals and the glamorization of various vices in Nigerian films, as announced by Dr. Shaibu Husseini, the Executive Director/CEO of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB).
The announcement was made at a National Stakeholders Engagement on Smoke-Free Nollywood in Enugu on Wednesday, organized by the NFVCB and Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA).
Husseini emphasized the urgent need for this regulatory action to address an industry emergency. The new regulation, approved by the Minister of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, aims to curtail the display of smoking, money rituals, ritual killings, and the glamorization of other crimes in movies, musical videos, and skits.
The prohibition aligns with efforts to sanitize the film industry and protect the largest segment of Nigerian movie viewers—teens and young adults—from negative influences. The NFVCB plans to undertake detailed enlightenment programs across various institutions to promote smoke-free movies and positive health messages.

The NFVCB, in collaboration with CAPPA, introduced these subsidiary regulations due to gaps in the existing law regarding smoking in films. The board is prepared to lead these efforts and ensure compliance through registration and monitoring of all film and video outlets nationwide.
