Nigerian superstar Davido has proclaimed himself as the preeminent figure in the worldwide Afrobeats scene.
In an exclusive interview with Billboard’s Nadine Graham, the renowned artist confidently asserted his dominance in the Afrobeats genre across the globe.
When the interviewer, Graham, referred to him as the leader of Afrobeats in the United States, Davido swiftly interjected, asserting his supremacy beyond national borders, stating, “I am leading everywhere.”
Reflecting on his global influence, Davido expressed his desire for audiences to anticipate “Just good music.” He emphasized the widespread reach of his work, noting with astonishment that even incarcerated individuals have been exposed to his musical creations.
Amidst discussions about his upcoming projects, Davido provided insights into his creative endeavors, revealing that he is currently immersed in the production of two distinct albums. One album is tailored for African audiences, while the other is strategically crafted to resonate with American listeners.
Notably, the artist shared his enthusiasm for a particular collaboration, citing ‘2 AM‘ with Casanova and Tory Lanez as his favorite. He lauded the track for its ability to blend Canadian, Nigerian, and American cultural influences.

Davido’s declaration is coming on the heels of Wizkid’s ‘departure‘ from afrobeats.
The Grammy-winning Nigerian sensation took to social media to set the record straight that he is not an Afrobeats artiste.
Via his Instagram story, Wizkid announced the completion of his next album, while at the same time, he was issuing a disclaimer to his fans. He cautioned them against expecting an Afrobeats rendition from him in his upcoming project.
“Album done! See you soon b*tches!” he exclaimed, before delivering a blunt message to those who associate him solely with Afrobeats.
“And abeg if you like Pakurumo Wizkid, don’t download this new album. In fact, delete me from your playlist and your life! If you like Afrobeats, don’t download my album. I’m not a f*cking Afrobeats artiste. I am not Afro anything.”
This statement from the acclaimed musician left many fans and industry insiders scratching their heads, as Wizkid has long been associated with the Afrobeats genre, where’s he has undoubtedly played a pivotal role in popularizing Afrobeats on the global stage.
However, his latest declaration suggests a departure from the genre that has defined much of his career.
He later followed up with an explanation regarding his ‘departure’, saying he creates all sorts of music, and describing him as an afrobeats artist is a way of pigeonholing him.
