Europe’s climate monitoring agency, Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), reported that March 2024 marked the warmest March on record globally, extending a streak of unprecedented heat for the 10th consecutive month.
Sea surface temperatures surged to new highs, intensifying concerns about extreme weather events.
In a new climate change development, March saw an average temperature of 14.14 degrees Celsius (57.9 degrees Fahrenheit), surpassing the previous record set in 2016 by a tenth of a degree. This temperature spike represents a significant deviation from the average March temperature between 1850-1900, the pre-industrial benchmark period.
Regions across the globe, spanning from Africa to Greenland and South America to Antarctica, grappled with above-average temperatures throughout the month. Notably, this heatwave extends beyond March, constituting the hottest 12-month period ever recorded, with temperatures soaring 1.58 degrees Celsius (34.8 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels.
Attributed primarily to greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, this sustained warming trend alarms climate scientists. Samantha Burgess, Deputy Director of Copernicus Climate Change Service, expressed grave concern over the frequency of these record-breaking events, emphasizing the urgent need for climate action.

Although these temperatures have not yet surpassed the 1.5-degree Celsius limit outlined in the Paris Agreement, experts warn that the world is on the brink, with 2023 already identified as the hottest year on record.
Moreover, ocean surface temperatures also surged to unprecedented levels in March, setting a new global record. Despite the onset of a weakening El Niño, which typically influences global weather patterns, sea surface temperatures reached an average of 21.07 degrees Celsius (69.93 degrees Fahrenheit), further exacerbating climate concerns.
