Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved a sum of N1 billion for the construction of a new Senate Building at the main Campus of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) in Ondo City.
In the landmark of demonstrating his commitment to renovating a state-owned tertiary institute, the governor made the announcement on Thursday during the institution’s 5th Convocation Ceremony.
Recall that on 30 January 2024, Governor Aiyedatiwa assured the governing council of the three state tertiary institutions that his administration is committed to providing full assistance to Ondo-owned universities in his office in Akure.
Governor Aiyedatiwa highlighted the government’s commitment to providing essential infrastructure in state-owned institutions and resources to facilitate their academic and professional pursuits.
While speaking on the continuous growth and success of the university, Aiyedatiwa applauded the institution’s leadership and stakeholders for their collective efforts in advancing medical education in Ondo State.
Aiyedatiwa’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan in a statement said the governor urged the graduating students to uphold the core values of excellence, compassion, and responsibility instilled in them by UNIMED, encouraging them to make meaningful contributions to healthcare and society.
Looking at the historical significance of the convocation ceremony, Governor Aiyedatiwa celebrated the milestone of producing physicians within the state for the first time since its inception.
Governor Aiyedatiwa before the convocation commissioned several projects on the UNIMED campus, including the Multidisciplinary Laboratory Complex, the Learning Resource Centre, Block 2, and the Kamomi Aketi Accelerated Water Scheme.
The projects were aimed at enhancing learning environments and student welfare underscores the government’s dedication to fostering educational excellence and innovation.

Earlier, UNIMED Pro Chancellor who doubled as the Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Ayodele Arowojolu, highlighted the institution’s progress and reiterated the need for continued financial support for infrastructural development.
“It is important to note that through the support of the Ondo State Government and the prudent management of the internally generated revenue of the university.
“The institution has developed tremendously within the last year; apart from the university programmes that received full accreditation from the National Universities Commission and other regulatory bodies, the university’s infrastructural development has also been improved.”
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi provided statistics of the graduating class, showcasing UNIMED’s commitment to academic excellence.
