The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has reacted to reports of a candidate being asked to remove her hijab during the accreditation process at the Bafuto Institute, Ile-Iwe Bus Stop, Ejigbo, Lagos.
On Monday, JAMB addressed the incident that occurred on Sunday, where officials instructed a candidate wearing a hijab to remove her head-covering scarf during the accreditation process before granting her access to the examination hall.
Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s PCA, disclosed that the incident drew attention from various platforms, including Muslim News.
However, he expressed deep regret over the incident, attributing it to the misplaced priorities of some accredited partners or officials who claimed ignorance of the board’s guidelines.
Furthermore, the examination board highlighted that investigations revealed that such incidents were not linked to any examination guidelines, but rather to the oversight of officials.
Additionally, a senior JAMB official at the scene promptly intervened, ensuring the candidate was allowed into the examination hall without further hindrance.

Also, emphasizing the need for everyone to respect the diverse religious practices in Nigeria, the board assured the public of a thorough investigation into the matter to prevent recurrence.
Meanwhile, the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) commenced smoothly on Friday, 19th April 2024.
According to the JAMB PCA, the board expected over 1.2 million candidates to have completed the examination by Monday, 22nd April 2024.
Fabian reaffirmed the board’s commitment to ensuring the selection of suitably qualified candidates for admission into tertiary institutions.
