Lagosians are abuzz with excitement as the Lagos State government kickstarts its “Ounje Eko” food markets initiative today, Sunday, March 17.
Following Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s announcement, these markets are poised to offer food items at discounted prices across the five divisions of the state.
Governor Sanwo-Olu unveiled plans for the “Sunday Markets” during a live media chat on February 22nd, aiming to alleviate the burden of the high cost of living. The initiative will see 57 markets operating exclusively on Sundays from 11 am to 4 pm.
In a statement released by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, it was revealed that staple food items like rice, beans, garri, bread, eggs, tomatoes, and pepper will be offered at a 25% discount. To ensure transparency and prevent exploitation, a voucher system will be implemented, with independent payment solution providers and carefully selected vendors facilitating the process.
The markets will be strategically located across 27 locations in Ikeja, six in Lagos Island, nine in Ikorodu, five in Epe, and 10 in Badagry. Prices of food items have been disclosed, with a 5kg bag of rice priced at N5,325, 5kg bag of beans at N6,225, and 5kg of garri at N3,975, among others.
Excitement among Lagos residents is palpable, with many expressing gratitude for the initiative while acknowledging the need for caution amidst expected crowds.
Mr. Sunday Akurulo, a resident of Ikosi Ketu, plans to send his wife to the market cautiously optimistic about the government’s promise. Conversely, Mrs. Patricia Ugorji is apprehensive about potential congestion, citing safety concerns.

As Lagosians prepare to flock to these discounted markets, the success of this initiative holds the promise of relief in the face of economic challenges, albeit with cautious optimism and awareness of potential risks.
