In a bold move signaling its entry into the electric vehicle (EV) market, Chinese technology giant, Xiaomi, has announced the commencement of deliveries for its inaugural electric car, the Speed Ultra 7 (SU7).

This marks Xiaomi’s maiden venture into the highly competitive automotive industry, with the vehicle set to hit the roads later this month.

With the price announcement slated for March 28th, anticipation is high among consumers eager to delve into Xiaomi’s innovative take on electric mobility. Leveraging its extensive retail network, Xiaomi has positioned itself with 59 stores across 29 cities in China to facilitate orders for the SU7, tapping into the nation’s burgeoning demand for EVs.

The SU7, unveiled last year, boasts a cutting-edge “super electric motor” technology, promising acceleration that rivals some of the leading EV models from Tesla and Porsche.

Xiaomi’s chief executive, Lei Jun, has expressed ambitions for the company to ascend among the top five global automakers, underlining Xiaomi’s commitment to the automotive sector with a $10 billion investment over the next decade.

One of Xiaomi’s strategic advantages lies in its integration of the car’s operating system with its existing ecosystem of smartphones and smart devices. This seamless connectivity aims to resonate with Xiaomi’s loyal customer base, offering a holistic user experience across their tech portfolio.

The production of the SU7 will be handled by a subsidiary of the state-owned BAIC Group, utilizing a manufacturing facility in Beijing capable of producing up to 200,000 vehicles annually. Xiaomi’s foray into electric mobility comes amidst a backdrop of fierce competition in China’s EV market, characterized by a price war among industry titans like Tesla and local contenders such as BYD.
