Birmingham City has sacked manager Wayne Rooney after just 83 days in charge of the Championship club.
The Manchester United legend was appointed following the controversial decision to dismiss John Eustace, with Blues sixth in the table. They have since fallen to 20th, even with Monday’s 3-0 loss to Leeds having been the ninth defeat of his 15-game tenure.
Professional development coach Steve Spooner will take interim charge for Birmingham, who have also parted company with one of Rooney’s backroom team member, former Wolves and Wales midfielder Carl Robinson.
While speaking, the 38 year old Rooney said football is a results business and he recognizes that they’ve not been at the level he wanted them to be.
Rooney went on to thank co-owners Tom Wagner and Tom Brady and chief executive Garry Cook for the opportunity to manage Birmingham City and the support they all gave him during his short period with the club.
He however said that he does not believe that 13 weeks was sufficient to oversee the changes that were needed adding that it would take him some time to get over this setback.
He further revealed that he wants to take some time to spend with his family as he prepares for the next opportunity in his journey as a manager.
Blues is six points clear of the relegation places and will travel to Hull City in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.
They will now play three crucial league games before the close of the January transfer window and all of them will be against teams just above them in the table, Swansea and Middlesbrough at home, either side of Stoke away.

It was always assumed that Rooney, who was appointed after the summer transfer window closed, would be given the January transfer window to put things right. But the club have opted to act now, giving a new manager time to work on any potential new signings.
The United legend has now made record, although it may be one he does not want to remember. He is now the shortest-serving Blues manager, in terms of time period, in their 132-year history.
