The Nigerian vice-captain, William Troost Ekong, is set to miss the remainder of the footballing season due to an injury.

The former Watford player picked up a hamstring injury in the group-stage clash between the Super Eagles and the Elephants of Ivory Coast where he missed the next game against Guinea-Bissau.

He, however, chose to play through the pain, playing every minute of the competition from there on, including a hundred and twenty minutes against South Africa, and that decision has now caused a ripple effect for the sacrifice he made.

Ekong, who featured in six of Nigeria’s seven games at the AFCON 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast, scoring three goals, was an integral part of Jose Peseiro’s team.

As Nigeria made its way to the AFCON 2023 final in which he scored, he fell short to a late Ivory Coast winner, Borussia Dortmund’s Sebastien Haller.
