In a devastating incident in Istanbul, Turkey, a fire at the Masquerade nightclub has resulted in the loss of at least 29 lives, with one individual reportedly injured.

The tragedy unfolded in the bustling city’s Gayrettepe district, where the club is located in the basement of a high-rise residential building.

The fire erupted shortly after midday, according to Istanbul Governor Davut Gül, even though its cause remains under investigation.

At the time, the nightclub was closed to the public, undergoing renovation work, which is believed to have involved the victims of the fire.

In the wake of the disaster, authorities have issued arrest warrants for eight individuals, including the nightclub’s manager and the person overseeing the renovation efforts. So far, three of those wanted have been detained as the investigation progresses.

The Masquerade club, situated beneath a 16-storey building, became the scene of emergency operations as firefighters and first responders were faced with the aftermath, with the entrance marked by smoke and char.

Currently, the grim tally of casualties has climbed throughout the day, with the governor’s office providing ongoing updates.

Istanbul’s re-elected Mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, shed light on possible regulatory lapses, noting that the club had not secured the appropriate construction permit for the renovations.

“There is no application [to the local municipality] for a renovation or a construction regarding the place,” he stated, highlighting the concealed nature of the work due to the club’s subterranean location.
