A devastating explosion at a hydroelectric power plant in northern Italy has claimed the lives of three individuals, with several others still unaccounted for in the aftermath of the blast.
The incident unfolded at a dam situated on Lake Suviana, approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) from the city of Bologna, around 3:00 PM local time (13:00 GMT). The power plant, nestled 30 meters (100 feet) below the water level, was rocked by the explosion, sending shockwaves through the surrounding area.
According to reports, the explosion in Italy is believed to have occurred during routine maintenance work, sparking a fire that quickly escalated into a major catastrophe. Marco Masinara, the mayor of the nearby town of Camugnano, expressed grave concern over the situation, revealing that rescue efforts have been hindered by difficult access to the affected areas.
“This is a serious accident. Several workers were present inside the plant, and others are still unaccounted for,” Masinara stated in remarks to Italian media outlets.
Calogero Turturici, the commander of the local fire and rescue service, painted a dire picture of the ongoing rescue operation, highlighting the challenges faced by emergency responders.
“Various sections of the plant are engulfed in smoke, while others have been inundated by floodwaters,” Turturici revealed, underscoring the complexity of the situation.

Lake Suviana, an artificial reservoir nestled in the picturesque Appennine mountain range near Bologna, was created following the construction of a dam in 1932.
