In what looked like a reminder of the 2002 armoury explosion, the Nigerian Army has said the incident that occurred yesterday at Farmland in Ikeja, Lagos State, was minor.
The Army Spokesman, Onyema Nwachukwu, confirmed the explosion occurred near a Mammy Market within the Nigerian Army Cantonment, but there was no record of any fatal event.
Nwachukwu narrated that the farmer, who cultivated the farmland, is said to have set fire to trash and other combustible waste which must have set off the explosion.
“We understand that there could be concerns among the general public as a result of the historical antecedent of explosion within the Cantonment,” Nwachukwu said.
With the current situation of the country in terms of security, news about explosion should be a cause for alarm.
Recall that the Lagos armoury explosion, which also was an accidental detonation of a large stock of high explosives at a military storage facility in the city of Lagos, Nigeria, on January 27th, 2002, had burnt down a large section of Northern Lagos, and created a panic that spread to other areas.
As a result of this, many unlucky Lagosians fled from flames that caused them to stumble into a concealed canal and drowned.
According to information taken from Wikipedia, the incident and its aftermath are believed to have killed at least 1,100 people and displaced over 20,000, with many thousands injured or homeless.

As a result, the NA reassured the public that everything is under control.
Furthermore, the NA Engineers Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team sealed off the farmland, while they carried out a comprehensive investigation to determine what caused the unfortunate event.
However, residents in the surrounding neighbourhood are reassured of their safety and are urged not to panic.
