A Nigerian man has disclosed that the family of the late actor Jnr Pope may need to allocate between N30 million to N40 million for traditional rites to bury him away from the river where he tragically lost his life.
In a live video on Instagram, the man explained that it is customary for significant amounts to be spent on traditional rites when someone dies by the riverside. He elaborated that according to tradition, when a person drowns in a river, the river spirits lay claim to the body.
Should the family choose to bury the deceased elsewhere, they must appease the river spirits with elaborate rituals to avoid potential consequences.
While acknowledging that settling the river spirits through traditional rites is possible, the man cautioned that it might not entirely eliminate the associated risks.
The eyewitness, who was present at the scene of the accident, revealed that Jnr Pope’s family opted not to bury him at the river despite being aware of the customs. Fortunately, there were no confrontations with the river community, but they were duly informed of the potential repercussions of their decision.
“Jnr Pope’s Family might spend N30 Million – N40 Million to perform some traditional rites before they will be able to bury him anywhere else. According to tradition, anyone who passed away by drowning in a river can’t be buried outside that river,” the Nigerian man disclosed.
