Nollywood actor Johnpaul Nwadike has shared an emotional reflection on why he turned his back on the Nigerian movie industry despite once enjoying widespread popularity on screen.
In a candid post, Nwadike described his years in Nollywood as a period marked by passion but also profound struggle. “I’m happy I took the hardest but best decision ever,” he wrote. “I left Nollywood; I was eating from hand to mouth. Many movies I was featured in, I put more effort into them, but guess what? I was always paid pennies.”
Nwadike lamented the reality faced by many actors in the industry’s earlier days, explaining that although he played “all the very good roles” and was beloved by audiences, real financial reward remained elusive. “Acting was my passion, but the directors were the ones eating all of it,” he said, adding that during his time, there was “no Internet the way it’s now” to help promote and monetize his craft independently.
Reflecting on the turning point that changed his life, Nwadike credited his mother’s advice for guiding him away from the industry before he “almost lost [his] real self all because of acting.” Today, he proudly calls himself a U.S. citizen, thriving in a new career outside of film, and embracing family life as a married man with children.
“I’m so grateful that I listened to my mother,” he shared. “Now I’m a proud citizen of America not only that, I’m doing well in my other career and I’m a married man with loving kids.”
While his departure from Nollywood marked the end of one chapter, Nwadike’s story stands as a powerful testament to choosing personal wellbeing over fame — and to the courage it sometimes takes to start over.
