Electric car manufacturer, Tesla, has reached a settlement agreement in a lawsuit stemming from a tragic incident in 2018, where Walter Huang, an Apple engineer, lost his life in a collision involving his Tesla Model X operating on Autopilot mode.
The lawsuit, brought forth by Huang’s family, was slated to commence trial this week in the California Superior Court.
Had the trial proceeded, it would have intensified scrutiny on Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving technologies, raising questions about their safety and effectiveness. However, the terms of the settlement remain undisclosed, pending approval by a judge. Tesla has yet to provide official comment on the matter.
Before reaching the settlement, Tesla contended that Huang had misused the Autopilot system, citing his engagement in a video game moments before the accident. This case underscores ongoing debates surrounding driver responsibility and the limitations of automated driving systems.
Tesla, a pioneer in electric vehicles, has faced numerous legal challenges related to accidents involving its driver-assistance features. Additionally, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been conducting investigations into accidents involving Tesla’s Autopilot technology.
