There is tension at the National Secretariat of All Progressive Congress APC in Abuja over rumour going around about some people purportedly working underground to return the position of the National Chairman of the party to the North Central.
The plot was being said to have been orchestrated by the outgoing governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.
The position was initially zoned to the North-Central by the National Working Committee (NEC) of the party in 2022 and pushed to Nasarawa State where it was passed to Senator Abdullahi Adamu.
Adamu later fell from the exalted seat last year, shortly after Bola Tinubu’s inauguration as President, due to alleged corrupt practices in the office.
Tinubu’s man, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, former Governor of Kano State, became his replacement during an emergency NEC meeting where his appointment was rectified.
Ganduje, who assumed the position after the removal of Senator Adamu amid internal party strife, now faces opposition from stakeholders who argue that the party’s constitution dictates that Adamu’s replacement should have emerged from the North Central zone.
According to reliable Sources within the APC, Governor Yahaya Bello, whose eight-year tenure in Kogi State ends on the 27th of this month, is positioning himself as a successor to Ganduje.
The move is seen as a response to the dissatisfaction with Ganduje’s leadership, with critics pointing to perceived imbalances in appointments favouring the North West zone.
Bello has spoken to many insiders of the party from the North-Central. His determination to oust the embattled National Chairman relied on the fact that the position was hitherto zoned to the North-Central while Ganduje from the North-West hurriedly snatched it.

According to the complaint being rallied around, the former Governor Ganduje was allegedly imposed on the party by the president, without due consideration for whose zone owns the position.
The source said, “The game plan is to force Ganduje out of office before the next general elections. Plans are already on to force him out. And mind you, nothing is impossible in politics“.
