Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has stated that politicians under the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) should face scrutiny from anti-graft agencies for alleged corrupt practices during the previous administration.

The Lion and the Jewel author urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to take action.

He expressed intention of focusing on the past politicians.

While acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s role as a “doughty fighter” during the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) era, Mr Soyinka emphasised the importance of holding individuals accountable for their past actions.

He stated, “Even law recognises that somebody’s record must always be taken into account before you descend on that person for some kind of neglect, criminality, failure, whatever.”

Mr Soyinka asserted that he would not let past achievements of the president influence his stance on present economic issues.

“I cannot say because you were a fighter during the NADECO struggle, therefore, I will sit down and watch you condone corruption, that includes failures.”

The Nobel Laureate expressed concern about individuals in President Tinubu’s government who may need to face trial but currently hold crucial positions in the ruling party.

He questioned, “Are they asking questions from the EFCC? This and this individual who held this position at this time who had immunity at the time, no longer has immunity, ICPC, EFCC, what are you doing about them? What happened? We’ve been waiting.”

Soyinka, who visited Tinubu last December, stated that his assessment of the current administration would be made after Tinubu’s first anniversary in office.
