The Department of State Services (DSS) urged Organized Labor to reconsider their plans for the protest slated for 27th and 28th February 2024, citing concerns over disruptions to peace and public order.
Dr Peter Afunanya, the Director of PR & Strategic Communications at the DSS National Headquarters in Abuja, issued a press release today wherein the agency acknowledged the legitimate right of the labour movement to protest, but urged for restraint in light of the current socio-economic climate.
Dr Afunanya emphasized the importance of dialogue and negotiation as constructive avenues for addressing grievances, cautioning against actions that could escalate tensions, and lead to widespread violence.
“It is common knowledge that all levels of Government are striving to ameliorate the prevailing economic condition and as such, should be given a benefit of the doubt,” stated Dr Afunanya.
He emphasized that authorities are actively engaged in collaborative efforts to alleviate the challenges facing the nation and urged citizens to allow these processes to unfold.

The DSS emphasized the importance of maintaining internal stability and unity, highlighting the potential “catastrophic repercussions” of escalating conflicts, both domestically and globally.
The agency urged various sectors of society, including parents, guardians, political parties, religious and traditional institutions, and others, to show leadership by rejecting violence and divisive rhetoric.
Furthermore, the DSS cautioned citizens against being manipulated by external forces seeking to undermine national peace and encouraged vigilance in safeguarding public safety and harmony.
Dr Afunanya reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to collaborating with other security and law enforcement agencies to uphold peace and security throughout the country.
DSS however spoke about its opposition to violence as a solution to modern challenges, stressing the significance of constructive dialogue and collective efforts in addressing the nation’s socio-economic issues.
