The Rivers State House of Assembly passes two bills to repeal the Rivers State House of Assembly Service Commission Amendment Law No. 3 of 2006 and to amend the Principal Law of 1999.
In their 109th Legislative Sitting, the House of Assembly members read the bill to the Rivers State Education.
Before passing the bill, a minute of silence was observed as a sign of respect to the dismissal of the deceased, Mr. Herbert Wigwe, wife, and son, who recently lost their lives in a helicopter plane crash in California.
The House, via a motion presented by Hon. Lemchi Nyeche, Member, representing Ikwerre Constituency, observed a minute of silence in honour of the late Dr. Herbert Wigwe, his wife, Chizoba Wigwe, and son, Chizzy Wigwe, who died in a helicopter crash in United States of America.
Remarking on the motion, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, expressed deep condolences of the House to the Wigwe family, the people of Ikwerre Local Government, and the State.
In a post shared by the Rivers State House of Assembly on Facebook, however, it was stated that the House of Assembly has resolved to reach out to the family and urged the state government to immortalise him, as prayed in the motion.
Furthermore, the House debated the pros and cons of the bill, and the committee arrived at a resolution of the bill by clause consideration.
Members and sponsors of the bill describe the process as a staff-centred and staff-friendly bill.

Speaking earlier, the speaker of the house, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, noted the bill is aimed at the growth of the staff in the House of Assembly to increase their career in the service like their counterparts in the other two arms of government.
The speaker further explained that the power bestowed on the Assembly in appointing the Chairman and Members of the Assembly Service Commission by the 1999 Principal Law was withdrew and given to the Executive by the 2006 amendment.
Adding to that, when the aforementioned bill of the 2006 Amendment Law is revoked, it will enable the Legislature to work independently.
“The House gave first reading to a bill sponsored by Hon. Tekenari Granville, Member representing Asari Toru Constituency 1.
“The Bill seeks to amend Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) Law No. 1 of 2005 by deleting from the Schedule “Kalabari Girls High School, Buguma,” the statement read.
