The House of Representatives is set to delve into the potential national security risks posed by the operations of cryptocurrency, blockchain, and other digital asset transactions.
This initiative emerged following the approval of a motion presented by Rep. Isiaka Ibrahim (APC-Ogun) during a recent session in the nation’s capital.
Rep. Ibrahim highlighted the increasing global anxiety surrounding the potential for cryptocurrencies to undermine national security. These digital assets, accessible via cryptocurrency exchanges, are feared to facilitate money laundering and support the nefarious activities of criminals and terrorists.
In response to these concerns, the House has announced a comprehensive investigation covering a broad spectrum of digital financial activities.
The inquiry will extend beyond cryptocurrencies to examine international money transfer operators, various payment gateways and platforms, and cloud computing services.
It aims to scrutinize the infrastructure underpinning these technologies, including networks and online peer-to-peer (P2P) marketplaces, along with utility sharing-based platforms operating within Nigeria.
A critical aspect of this investigation will be to pinpoint any threats to national security and identify loopholes in current laws, regulations, and statutory provisions that could be exploited to the country’s detriment.
Furthermore, the investigation will assess the global standing of the e-naira, scrutinizing the expenses, procedures, and legal compliance involved in its establishment.
To achieve a thorough and effective examination, the House plans to collaborate with all pertinent stakeholders. This collaborative effort seeks to pave the way for the creation of robust legislation and regulatory frameworks addressing the challenges and risks associated with digital asset transactions.
The probe will also attempt to shed light on the identities, legal statuses, and regulatory compliance of operators within the sector. Their potential involvement in activities detrimental to Nigeria, such as money laundering, illicit transactions, currency speculation, and other malpractices, will be thoroughly investigated.
