In hope for the forthcoming protest organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and allied unions, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, has initiated extensive measures to ensure public safety and security during the demonstration, thus preempt any potential hijacking of the protest which is slated for the 27th and 28th of February 2024.

Under the directive of Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, CP Olufemi has instructed the deployment of a substantial number of police personnel across Delta State. This proactive step aims to safeguard both participants and the general public.

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, disclosed this information through a statement released in Warri on Monday, underscoring the commitment of law enforcement to maintain peace and order while upholding citizens’ right to peaceful protest.

Emphasizing the importance of lawful conduct, CP Olufemi warned prospective demonstrators that any infractions would be met with swift arrest and prosecution. He reiterated this stance during engagements with Area Commanders, Tactical Commanders, and Divisional Police Officers, urging them to implement measures to prevent any disruption of public order.

The statement outlined, “As part of measures to ensure a smooth protest, the CP engaged in a stakeholder meeting with leaders of NLC, TUC, and IPMAN on February 22, 2024, to discuss strategies for facilitating a peaceful demonstration.”

It reiterated that while the police are committed to protecting protesters’ safety, violent acts will not be tolerated.

To bolster intelligence efforts, the State Intelligence Department has deployed undercover operatives to monitor activities and report any suspicious behavior. Additionally, the personnel have been drawn from various tactical units, including Safer Highway, Dragon Patrol, Safe Delta, and Rapid Response Squad, among others, to reinforce security measures.
