The Nigerian Army, 6 Division said it has destroyed 233 illegal refineries in the Niger Delta region and arrested 112 suspects in 2023.
The General Officer Commanding, 6 Division, Nigerian Army/Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force, South-South, code-named Operation Delta Safe, Maj. Gen. Jamal Abdussalam stated this while reeling out the achievements of the division in 2023.
It would be recalled that there have been intensive attacks by the military on oil theft in the country following a presidential order to the service chiefs to end oil theft by June this year.
The GOC, who spoke over the weekend during the 6 Division Combined West African Social Activities, said the military also impounded 72 trucks/vehicles and recovered 356 arms and ammunition last year.
While saying this at the 29 Battalion Parade Ground, Port Harcourt Barracks, Rivers state, he assured that the Army, in synergy with sister agencies, would continue to ensure an enabling environment for seamless oil production in the Niger Delta region.
“In the year, we were able to make 112 arrests, destroy 233 illegal refineries, and recover over 356 arms and ammunition.
“We will continue to contentiously perform our constitutional roles to defend democratic values in the country.
“I enjoin you all to remain dedicated and focused in the discharge of our collective responsibility,” he stated.

The GOC, who commented on the social event, said WASA was meant to strengthen social relationships among officers, men, and their families.
“It also provides an avenue for informal social interaction and a forum for the barracks community to showcase its rich and diverse cultural heritage.
The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, at the occasion, lauded the Nigerian Army for its effort in fighting the diverse security problems confronting the country.
The governor was represented by the secretary to the state government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo who said civilian-military cooperation was a sure way to foster and strengthen a healthy society like Nigeria.
