In a press conference held today, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has provided crucial details regarding the tragic explosion that shook Ibadan on Tuesday evening.
The incident, initially shrouded in mystery, has now been linked to explosives stored by illegal miners, resulting in two fatalities and 77 reported injuries.
Governor Makinde expressed his condolences for the lives lost and assured that comprehensive search and rescue operations were underway.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the blast originated from a house in the Bodija area, occupied by illegal miners who had stored explosive devices.
“We visited the scene of the explosion…This unfortunate incident resulted in death and injury to residents in the vicinity and also affected properties,” said Governor Makinde.
“Earth moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security were deployed to the scene of the incident.”
The governor confirmed that medical personnel were on standby at various hospitals within Ibadan, treating the wounded and providing necessary assistance. The injured victims were both treated and discharged, with 77 reported cases and two fatalities.
“I have directed that the medical bills of all victims be covered by the government. We will also be providing temporary accommodation for those whose houses were affected and ensuring that they are supported to rebuild their lives,” Governor Makinde assured.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with security agencies working to determine the individuals responsible for storing explosives in the residential area. Governor Makinde emphasized that anyone found culpable would be brought to justice.
“I urge all residents to please call 615 for any emergencies…and to remain calm and stay away from the immediate scene of the incident to allow rescue operations to be carried out without interference,” he added.
The governor expressed gratitude to first responders, security personnel, and all those assisting in rescue operations. He concluded by requesting prayers for those affected by the disaster as the community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the explosion.
