Nigerian Eligible Winger Signs For Wigan Athletic On Loan

Nigeria and Brentford FC B attacker, Michael Olakigbe, has joined English League One Club, Wigan Athletic, on loan.

The 20-year-old made his Premier League debut for the Bees during the just-concluded 2023/2024 season against Bournemouth.

He made a total of 12 appearances in all competitions for the Bees’ first team including a start against Newport County in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Olakigbe signed a 5-year extension with the premier league club last November, but he has to move out on loan to get more playing time and experience.

The club said, in a statement, that “Brentford B forward Michael Olakigbe has joined League One side Wigan Athletic on loan for the 2024/2025 season, subject to EFL, FA and Premier League approval.

Olakigbe committed his long-term future to the club in November 2023, signing a deal that keeps him with Brentford until the summer of 2028.

The second half of the 2023/24 season saw him join Peterborough United on loan, where he played five games for Posh as they finished fourth in League One, before losing in the play-off semi-final.

His three games for the B team this term saw him find the scoresheet on two separate occasions.

Olakigbe was born in England to Nigerian parents which made him eligible to represent both countries in future.

Following spells at Erith & Belvedere, the East Soccer Base and Queens Park Rangers academies,Olakigbe joined the Fulham Academy in 2018.

He progressed through the ranks from U14 level to sign a scholarship deal at the end of the 2019–20 season. He departed the club in July 2022 to join Brentford.
