Fostering efficient export monitoring and trade facilitation, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has joined forces with DG TAXUD, the Directorate General Taxation and Customs Union of the European Union (EU).
The collaboration was announced by Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, during a meeting at the NCS Corporate Headquarters on February 27, 2024.
Adeniyi highlighted the NCS’s commitment to working closely with DG TAXUD to improve export monitoring and documentation efficiency. As the competent authority for rules of origin, the NCS aims to facilitate the export process, emphasizing that enabling trade is crucial for fostering peace.
Acknowledging the initiative as a step towards economic union, the Comptroller General expressed enthusiasm for the Registered Exporters program. He called for the development of a framework for verifying and validating export commodities, with a specific interest in a digital platform to streamline document validation.
Adeniyi revealed ongoing collaborations with other Nigerian government agencies to maximize opportunities, citing past challenges leading to returned goods due to quality issues. He unveiled plans for a ‘one-stop-shop’ export seat for documentation and initiatives like Time Release Studies to expedite both imports and exports.

Gary Wilkinson from DG TAXUD highlighted the tariff discount of 4 percent for Nigerian products exported to the EU under the Generalized System of Preference (GSP) scheme. Wilkinson emphasized periodic visits to developing countries to verify the origin of products, with established rules governing the GSP scheme.
The collaboration aims to strengthen cooperation between the Customs departments of Nigeria and the EU, fostering a smoother, faster, and more accessible export process. The focus is on identifying and eliminating bureaucratic hurdles that cause delays and ensuring a seamless experience for Nigerian exporters.
