Historical Relevance
Originally celebrated on November 11 to coincide with the Remembrance Day for World War II veterans in the British Commonwealth of Nations, Nigeria shifted the date to January 15. This change commemorates the surrender of Biafran troops to Federal troops on January 15, 1970 which marked the end of the Nigerian Civil War.
Throughout the nation, Federal and State governments, along with citizens, are participating in various events to pay tribute to the military. The day includes symbolic traditions such as the release of pigeons for peace, the wreath-laying ceremonies, playing of the last post, Remembrance Day parades, and the firing of guns.
The commemorations often come on with the Nigerian Legion Humanitarian Day which emphasizes community service by veterans and empowerment initiatives for widows and orphans of fallen heroes.
The sale of remembrance emblems nationwide follows with proceeds deposited to the Nigerian Legion, a body of veterans.
