The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a Qatar-based businessman, Agu Amobi, and another individual, Uchegbu Obi, with substantial consignments of psychoactive substances at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos.
According to Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy at NDLEA, the arrests took place on Saturday, December 30.
Amobi was apprehended at the departure point of Terminal 2 of the MMIA as he was about to board a Qatar Airways flight to Doha.
Meanwhile, Obi was taken into custody on the same day following the interception of a consignment of 72,000 pills of tramadol 225mg, destined for Kano on a local flight.
Amobi, a Qatar resident for over a decade, was found with 1.30kg of concealed cannabis sativa in a bag of foodstuff.
In his defense, he claimed to have purchased the substance in Enugu with the intention of delivering it to Doha to meet financial obligations, including rent, school fees for his three children, both in Doha and Nigeria.
Simultaneously, at the domestic wing of the airport, NDLEA operatives intercepted a carton containing 72,000 pills of tramadol 250mg, weighing 38.50kg.
Uchegbu Onyebuchi Obi, the individual responsible for the consignment, intended to ship the drugs to Kano.
The NDLEA’s relentless efforts against drug trafficking extended beyond the airport incidents.

On Christmas day in Yobe State, officers patrolling along Nguru-Gashua road intercepted Musa Sani, Mohammed Ibrahim, and Adamu Usman in a truck carrying 39 blocks of cannabis sativa weighing 15.7kg and 128,500 pills of opioids.
Subsequent operations led to the arrest of the cannabis consignment’s owner, Ali Ibrahim (a.k.a Ramos), and the recovery of an additional 208 blocks, bringing the total to 247 blocks weighing 94.74kg. Mustapha Goni (a.k.a Lolo), the owner of the seized opioids, was also apprehended.
In other states, NDLEA operatives seized a significant amount of codeine syrup and opioids in Imo State, cannabis in Kano, and compressed cannabis along the Lagos-Ilorin expressway.
Notably, Yusuf Yahaya, arrested along the Lagos-Ilorin expressway, is under investigation for allegedly supplying illicit drugs to bandits in the Kebbi and Zamfara axis.
The NDLEA’s multi-state operations underscore their commitment to curbing the illicit drug trade, ensuring the safety and well-being of the Nigerian populace.
