The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has assured the public that cable operators are actively engaged in restoring connectivity following severe outages caused by submarine cable cuts. The disruption has affected several African internet service providers, prompting concerns among subscribers.
According to Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs at NCC, the affected operators include the West African Cable System, African Coast to Europe, SAT3, and MainOne, all of which experienced significant downtime.
Muoka revealed that the disruptions originated from incidents in Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, subsequently affecting connectivity in Portugal.
NCC highlighted similar challenges along other undersea cable routes, including Seacom, Europe India Gateway, and Asia-Africa-Europe 1, all of which suffered cuts. The commission emphasized that these incidents have led to service degradation across these routes.
Expressing frustration, many subscribers took to social media platforms to report difficulties in making phone calls and accessing online services.
In response, the NCC reassured the public that cable operators have initiated repair efforts, with services gradually being restored.
Operators have pledged to work tirelessly to ensure that services are reinstated to the affected countries within the shortest possible time. The NCC stressed the importance of informing corporations and consumers about these ongoing service disruptions.
Earlier, MTN Nigeria acknowledged the situation and assured its subscribers that efforts were underway to resolve the issue swiftly and restore services. This recent disruption comes on the heels of a similar incident a few weeks ago, where major operators across the country, including MTN, Airtel, and 9mobile, grappled with widespread network connection issues.
