KYIV, Ukraine — At least 12 people have been killed and more than 30 injured after a major Russian missile and drone assault struck Kyiv and surrounding areas early Thursday, Ukrainian authorities said.
Massive Russian strikes hit Kyiv killing several people
The overnight attack sent explosions across several parts of the Ukrainian capital, with emergency crews responding to fires and heavily damaged buildings. Initial reports identified damage in the Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts of Kyiv.

Residential buildings were among the structures affected, while fires were reported at several locations. The strikes also disrupted electricity supplies in parts of the city, adding to the pressure on residents already living under repeated air-raid alerts.
Emergency workers continued search-and-rescue operations as authorities assessed the extent of the destruction. Kyiv residents sought refuge in underground shelters and metro stations during the attack.
The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia used a combination of ballistic and cruise missiles and drones in the assault. Reuters later reported that the wider attack involved dozens of missiles and 168 drones, with Ukrainian air defences intercepting many of the incoming weapons.

Zelenskyy calls for stronger air defence
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed calls for international assistance, particularly additional air-defence systems and interceptor missiles.
Ukraine has repeatedly warned that shortages of Western-supplied air-defence interceptors are leaving its cities increasingly vulnerable to Russian ballistic missiles.
The latest attack comes amid an intensification of Russian aerial strikes across Ukraine, with Kyiv experiencing several major attacks in recent weeks.

Casualty figures continue to change. Initial reports put the death toll at 12, with more than 30 people wounded. Later updates from Ukrainian officials and international news agencies raised the reported toll in the wider Kyiv region to at least 16 dead and around 40 injured, highlighting the fact that casualty figures were still being revised as emergency operations continued.
