Bernardo Silva had put the Premier League champions ahead in the 26th minute, after meeting Kyle Walker’s right-wing cross with a sensational backheel, but newcastle took control of the game after scoring two goals in three minutes.

First goal was by striker Alexander Isak, when he collected a sweeping Bruno Guimaraes’ pass before curling past City’s reserve keeper, Stefan Ortega (who was replacing an injured Ederson), into the top corner for his fourth goal in four games.

Then, Anthony Gordon was released down the left and he took advantage of Walker, backing off to spectacularly curl into the bottom corner and send the home fans into a frenzy.

City had only lost once in 72 Premier League games when taking the lead and that record was under serious threat. This, until their talisman, De Bruyne, continued his comeback from injury with a top-class strike and a wonderful assist for Bobb.

The young Norwegian, Oscar Bobb, scored a stoppage-time winner as Manchester City moved within two points of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.

Bobb latched on to a superb lofted pass from fellow substitute, Kevin de Bruyne, and showed superb footwork to take the ball pass from Martin Dubravka and tap into the empty net.

Although Bobb would be happy to score his first premier league goal, the night belonged to the returning De Bruyne who once again showed why he is one of the best in the world.

De Bruyne was playing in the league for the first time since the opening day of the season on 11 August.

While speaking to news men De Bruyne said that “I enjoyed myself. It was crazy,

“I missed this. I had a big injury and I needed the time.”

When asked of his performance, he added: “I think it was more willpower than anything else.

“I know I’m not able to do that for 90 minutes at the moment. I can put in a shift for 30 minutes. I feel it in my lungs, especially with the cold.”
