LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has revealed that an estimated 160,000 residents are living with HIV, with  147,466 receiving antiretroviral treatment , the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) announced during its World AIDS Day 2025 briefing .
CHALLENGES DUE TO FOREIGN AID DISRUPTION
Dr. Folakemi Animashaun, LSACA CEO, said this year’s theme, “Overcoming Disruptions: Sustaining Nigeria’s HIV Response,” reflects challenges in Lagos, especially after a US government Stop Work Order  temporarily disrupted community HIV interventions. The order slowed testing, counseling, and psychosocial support, particularly affecting vulnerable groups.
DECLINE IN TESTING
Between January and September 2025, Lagos conducted 222,415 HIV tests, only 28.9% of last year’s output, highlighting the impact of these disruptions. Dr. Animashaun stressed the need for early testing and strong community support.
STATEWIDE HIV TESTING CAMPAIGN
The Statewide Community HIV Testing Campaign, launched on November 18, has tested 9,943 residents, with a 2% positivity rate , all linked to care. Women showed strong participation in  Ikorodu, Badagry, Ojo, and Mushin, demonstrating the success of  market-based and community-cluster strategies.
