The Gombe State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mohammed Bello Mu’azu, has issued a stern warning to men, urging them to confirm the HIV status of their partners, particularly those involved in extramarital affairs commonly referred to as ‘side chicks’.
The caution follows the arrest of an 85-year-old man who allegedly lured numerous young girls into sexual relationships.
Subsequent medical examinations revealed that he and his four wives were HIV positive. Commandant Mu’azu, while briefing journalists on the activities of the Command in 2023, highlighted the alarming prevalence of HIV in Gombe State, describing it as a ticking time bomb.
Expressing concern over the high prevalence rate, Mu’azu urged the public to avoid engaging in illicit sexual relationships and emphasized the importance of confirming the HIV status of their partners before entering into any sexual relationship.
The Commandant of the NSCDC cautioned that many carriers in the state might be in their window period, making it crucial for individuals to be vigilant and responsible.

He also shed light on the challenges faced by the NSCDC in dealing with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that allegedly support same-sex relationships and marriage, a situation reportedly on the rise in the state. This revelation followed the arrest of 76 individuals accused of participating in a “gay party” in Gombe State last year.
