The Police operative in Kenya have arrested two Nigerians, William Opia and Johnbull Asbor for killing and dismembering a 20-year-old girl, Rita Waeni.
The deceased, who was a student of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), was found dead in an apartment in the Roysambu area of Nairobi on January 14, 2024, with her head missing.
The discovery of Waeni’s head, covered in a sack and wrapped in a purple blouse, sent shockwaves through the community and intensified the search for her killers.
It was reported that her body parts were discovered inside a trash bag in the apartment by the caretaker. While a head suspected to be hers was recovered from a dam in Kiambaa, in Kiambu county on Sunday, January 21.
The Chief Magistrate, of the Makadara Law Courts the on Monday, January 22 arraigned the pair, who were found hiding in an apartment in Ndenderu, Kiambu County not far from where Waeni’s head was later recovered.

Constable Benjamin Wangila of Kasarani DCI offices told the court that the suspects’ proximity to the body parts’ discovery further strengthened the case against them.
During the investigations, the Police recovered a hatchet, a butcher knife, and other items from the house where the suspects were arrested for dismembering the innocent lady. They also recovered six mobile phones, three laptops, 10 SIM cards, among other items.
“The investigation team is seeking to obtain call data records for all the SIM cards and mobile phone numbers recovered from the respondents to ascertain whether they were involved in the murder,” the paper quoted Constable Benjamin Wangila in an affidavit filed to the court.
Authorities plan to analyze call data from the seized devices to establish the suspects’ connection to the murder.
Wangila stated in a court affidavit that obtaining blood samples for DNA analysis and comparison against crime scene samples is crucial.
Concerns were raised about the suspects being flight risks due to their lack of legal residency and fixed address, leading Senior Principal Magistrate Agnes Mwangi of Makadara Law Courts to grant an eight-day detention order at Kasarani police station. The affidavit disclosed that Opia allegedly purchased the hatchet online for self-defence.
The investigation into Waeni’s murder is ongoing, with authorities working to comprehend the motive and reconstruct the events leading to her tragic death.
