Idris Tenshi, an Islamic cleric, has issued a public apology over his inflammatory remarks calling for the killing of Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of the president.

In a recent sermon, Tenshi had referred to Mrs. Tinubu as an “infidel” and suggested she should be targeted for execution.

His comments sparked widespread condemnation, with various groups, including the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN), demanding the arrest and prosecution of the Islamic cleric for incitement to violence.

In a newly released video, Tenshi expressed remorse for his statements, acknowledging that they were a mistake. He clarified that he no longer stands by his earlier remarks and has retracted them completely.

“I would like to pass this message to Nigerians regarding a video I did which is circulating on social media,” Tenshi stated. “All the things I said were a mistake and I don’t stand on the words I said. Other clerics have given me a proper explanation of the verse that I quoted.”

Recognizing his fallibility as a human being, Tenshi extended his apologies directly to Mrs. Remi Tinubu, describing her as “like a mother” to Nigerians.

He emphasized that his comments were made during a politically charged period and expressed his commitment to supporting Bola Tinubu and his family now that they are in power.

“Now that God has given Bola Tinubu power, we have no other option than to support him and wish him and his family well,” the Islamic cleric remarked. “Whoever felt offended by the things I said, I am sorry.”

Tenshi’s apology comes amidst heightened tensions and calls for accountability in Nigeria’s public discourse.

While some may view his contrition as a positive step towards reconciliation, others continue to stress the importance of promoting tolerance and respect for diverse perspectives in the country’s sociopolitical landscape.
