A human rights group has taken it upon themselves to write a petition to the governor of Lagos State and the Inspector General of Police over the case of incessant killings and abuse of rights in a Lagos community.
A group, Human Rights Action Watch, has called on Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to come to the aid of residents in Okeegun Baale Eleran Igbe Community at Ibeju, Lekki area of Lagos State over incessant attacks by land grabbers in the area.
At a Press conference in Lagos State yesterday, the group said the peace of the community has been under serious threat from the activities of land grabbers.
The Executive Director of the group, Comrade Tunji Balogun noted that the entire community was in tension and intense fear of these most dreaded notorious land grabbers.
According to the Human Rights Action Watch, these land grabbers run a syndicated criminal web of cultists in connivance with some ranking police officers in their payroll; thus, constituting huge impediments to ensuring justice and due diligent investigation.
The group appealed for prompt rescue and protection of the traditional ruler of the community, Chief Shakiru Adebola Elemoro, Baale of Okeegun Baale Eleran Igbe community, and one Mrs Macaulay Adenike alongside other people who were injured during an attack on the community.

Comrade Tunji also said the appeal becomes necessary to put an end to the recent rampaging evil agenda and criminalities of terrorism, threat and violent conducts and land grabbing menace in the area.
The group also talked about the alleged murder of one Mr Abiodun Raji, who was allegedly shot dead on 25th May 2023 in an attack by the land grabbers.
“We have several times intervened as a human rights organization to raise awareness on this matter alongside family members of the affected communities and the deceased family, but no attention was given to this ugly situation,
“The necessity and importance of the aforementioned matter to the aforementioned offices of the governor of the state and that of inspector general of police will go a long way to salvage the lives of innocent Nigerians and ancient communities, which have been in existence for over 1,000 years with records of existing farmlands, houses, graveyards, artefacts, churches and mosque.
“We demand that all persons found culpable should be made to face the full wrath of the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“We shall appreciate a full investigation of all issues relating to the aforementioned crimes, such as criminal trespass to property, forgeries of land title documents, harassment, fraudulent misrepresentation, deceits and serial threats bordering on excessive interference with the peaceful habitation and intimidation of community leaders and other innocent Nigerian citizens who are residents within the Okeegun Baale Elerangbe community, ” Comrade Tunji Balogun said.
They further alleged that a notorious cult leader and member of the land grabbers syndicate, popularly called Abbey was responsible for the murder of Abiodun Raji.
The group therefore demanded a thorough investigation and land forensic investigation audit of all allotments by the Lagos state government, while also urging the Inspector General of Police to come to the aid of the community to arrest the urgent situation.
