It’s once again another edition of the GOLDENPAGE MAGAZINE weekly review of some of the major sports events, majorly covering football, basketball, and others in the past few days.
If you are like us, this passing week was most likely a very long and boring one as the international break took effect. However, these are some of the biggest international matches and events that took place during the week:
The Jollof Rice War
The Super Eagles of Nigeria were able to see off long time rivals, the Black Stars of Ghana, in a football friendly match 2-1. It also doubled as a show for the in-match head coach, Finidi George, who showcased his tactical prowess earning the praise of Nigerians and players alike.
However, it is too early to know if he is leading the race for the Super Eagles’ head coach job. For now, he continues to take charge of the Super Eagles.
This was also the first time in 18 years (since 2006) that the Super Eagles of Nigeria will defeat the Black Stars of Ghana.
A Cristiano-less Portugal
With Joao Cancelo’s statement of the team not needing Cr7, it seems like the players decided to go on the pitch and prove it as they defeated Sweden 5-2 in a friendly to further stamp it.
Also, the victory against Sweden marked the first time since 2007 that a player who was not Cristiano Ronaldo would were the No.7.
The iconic number was worn by Bruma who started from the bench and eventually scored Portugal’s 4th of the night. Bruma however will have to settle for his usual No.17 as Cr7 is expected to make his return against Slovenia this coming Tuesday.
Speaking of the G.O.A.T Cr7, his counterpart Lionel Messi was absent as world champions Argentina showcased their mercilessness with a 3-0 victory over El Salvador – thanks to goals from Lo Celso, Romero and Enzo Fernandez.

Both Argentina and Portugal showed even for a little while that they may be able to survive without the two Goats leading them.
In other related News, former Liverpool and Atletico Madrid striker, Fernando Torres, was on the score sheet in a legends friendly against Ajax, the world cup winner featured along side former teammates like Steven Gerrard in the friendly football match which was to raise funds for the Liverpool football club foundation.
The 40-year-old, who retired from playing following a spell at Japanese side Sagan Tosu in 2019, impressed fans with his skills as he linked up with his former teammates during a training session before the game.
After netting late as Liverpool legends defeated Ajax, Torres received a standing ovation from the Anfield crowd.
However, clearly still scorned from his acrimonious exit, some fans insisted Torres should not have been greeted with such a warm welcome from the Anfield faithful.
Speaking of retired players, Zidane was on show as Porto legends defeated Real Madrid legends in a friendly showing.
Players like Zidane, Luis Figo, Roberto Carlos and former club captain Raul were all on display once again for los Blancos.
Zinedine Zidane rolled back the years with an impressive display in the match between Real Madrid Legends and Porto Legends.
The annual charity match took place at the Bernabeu with proceeds set to go towards the fight against ALS and sustainability of Real Madrid Foundation’s projects.
The 51-year-old showed he hasn’t lost his superb close control and tricks which had some supporters off their seats during his playing career.
